INTRO: I want to deal with the subject of persecution this morning. This afternoon, after a potluck lunch we want to join the Christian Church for the International Day of Prayer for the persecuted church. We will be praying for other parts of the world but I want to remind us this morning that we can experience persecution right here. It may even be that we persecute others and are not aware of doing so. So we will make this message more personal than dealing with other parts of the world, though these principles will apply everywhere.
The basic idea of persecution in Scripture comes from the idea 'to pursue'. So, we might call it 'persue cution'. Let me briefly define what persecution is. To write a definition of persecution, I have borrowed from Ronald Boyd-MacMillan's definition, in his book, "Faith That Endures". “Christian persecution is any hostile feelings, attitudes, words, or actions experienced by a Christian from any other person as a result of that Christian's identification with Christ and the truths of the Word of God.”
