INTRO: We are in the process of looking at the four Gospels of the NT. The word Gospel means good news, and there is no greater 'good news' that has ever been heard by mankind after the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden than that which these four Gospels contain. Sin has plagued man ever since Adam and Eve. God told Adam and Eve that the day they ate of the tree of the knowledge of Good and evil, they would die. They did die that day. It was spiritual death. Spiritual death is when man is spiritually separated from God. Spiritual death means that if a person dies in that state, that person will go to an eternal hell. That is the clear teaching of Jesus, the Messiah.
God provided a way of being right with Him to Adam and Eve and clothed them with skins from animals. There is the first blood sacrifice to atone for sin. But all the sacrificial blood shed in the OT did not forgive sin, it atoned for it. That means it covered it. Hebrews 10:4 says, "For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins." So all the sins that were taken care of in the OT were covered, but they needed to be taken away yet. That taking away of sin was pictured by the two goats sacrificed on that high and holy day of atonement of Yom Kippur. One of the goats was chosen to be sacrificed and its blood was used to make atonement. Then the sins of the nation were confessed over the second goat, the goat from which we get the word 'scapegoat' and it was sent into the wilderness, picturing the bearing away of sin. What all of this pictured was Christ's death on our behalf, and then the bearing away of our sins.
