A brief stop at Ephesus as Paul neared the end of his second missionary journey revealed some openness to the Gospel among the Jews in the synagogue. This set the stage for his return and lengthy stay in his soon to follow, third and final missionary journey, as recorded in the book of Acts.
Paul's initial ministry in Ephesus when he returned was to believers who hadn't yet heard of the finished work of Jesus Christ and the coming of the Holy Spirit. They had believed what they knew, but there was great progress in the revelation of God's salvation of mankind. After hearing the rest of the story from Paul, they believed and were baptized, identifying themselves with Jesus Christ. Their salvation was confirmed as they were speaking in tongues and prophesying as the outward expression of their having received the Holy Spirit. This temporary sign of genuine believers among the different groups who were forming the new church is neither present nor necessary in the age of the church today.
