In 5:4 the writer switches from strictly speaking about the high priests under the old covenant and makes a universal proclamation about the nature of the high priesthood. That is, those who serve do not take the role themselves, but are appointed by God Himself. This was true of Aaron who passively waited for vindication by God's hand when Korah challenged his position. And this was true of Christ who declared that it was the Father who had both sent and appointed Him to the office His office was primarily for the Father's glory (John 8:54). But then in verses 5-6 the writer makes a bold declaration about the unique nature of Christ's office. The high priests under the old covenant were to come from the lineage of Aaron. However, Christ's office of high priest is not dependent on a biological lineage that was susceptible to death, but was of a new order, that of Melchizedek, an eternal office.
