As the high priest in order of Melchizedek, Jesus Christ had to be human in every way. The writer's description in 5:7 describes our Lord's humanity in that He cried out to the Father on His own behalf to save Him from death. But rescue from death was not a rescue from physical death or suffering. No, rather it was a deliverance from the power of death, the power that keeps man in the grave.
But through that suffering Christ also "learned obedience." That is, not that Christ didn't know what it meant to be obedient, but He had to both experience and demonstrate obedience in the midst of suffering. And because He did, Christ was made "perfect" through that suffering, i.e. He was made suitable to be our great high priest.
