The writer of Hebrews in chapter 5 begins his contrast of the high priests of old and our superior high priest Jesus Christ. He first sets out to define what the role high priest was in in the old covenant. First, he had to be chosen among men in order to represent men. Second, he was to offer on behalf of the people sacrifices to satisfy the justice of God. Third, as high priest he was to deal with the sin of the people in am measured way: 1. So he could lead them to the path of righteousness and 2. because he himself was subject to the same sinful and frail sinful nature as they. Lastly, because he himself was sinful, the earthly high priest first had to offer a sacrifice of a bull on the Day of Atonement so he could be made right with God before he offer the sacrifice of the goats on behalf of the people. This sets the stage to the writer's call for the need of a superior high priesthood that would come in the person of Jesus Christ.
