Today I will preach a sermon that will launch us into the New Year, and into a new sermon series which will be expository sermons from Isaiah. But in this sermon I want to address the themes of preaching and hearing sermons. Both of these are of tremendous importance. On the one hand, preaching is the divinely appointed means of communicating the word of God. So the preacher is simply a steward of the word, and it is his responsibility to accurately convey what God has said. On the other hand, hearing is the divinely appointed means of receiving the communication from God. So the hearer also has a responsibility for how they hear what God has to say. This unique setting is the divinely appointed means of God's redemptive activity. This is the primary setting through which Christ will build His church. I am not saying that nothing occurs outside of this setting, but everything that does occur is in the “wake” of this setting. Now, having said that, this sermon will highlight both responsibilities, and several practical suggestions will be offered for the hearers in particular. May God be pleased to bless His holy word, for the profit of His people, as we begin this New Year!
