Once again it is our privilege as the people of God to come to the Lord's Supper. This is a privilege that is extended to the children of God and to them alone, and it is our Lord's designated time to remember His death, and to reflect upon its great significance in our lives. In this sermon I will open up the words of Jesus in His cry of dereliction from the cross. But what I want to emphasize is what Jesus was actually experiencing at this point in His redemptive work. He was in extreme agony with respect to His physical trauma, but that was minor as compared to His mental stress and emotional upheaval. But infinitely worse, and with no possible comparison, was the dreadful desertion by His own Father. But in spite of such devastation upon His humanity, our Lord was faithful to fulfill His mission. He stayed put, and He endured the wrath of God in order that His people might be spared. I will close the sermon with three statements that connect what Jesus did to our sin – and to God's love. May God grant us insight into our Savior once again, and may we come to the Lord's Supper in a profitable and edifying way.
