Justification by faith alone lies at the heart of the five solas. It is by faith that we receive the astonishing grace of the gift of righteousness given to us in Jesus Christ. It is not trusting in what we have done but in decisively looking away from ourselves to another that we are declared right before God. There is no basis for boasting – even faith itself is a gift. Such faith will, and must, show itself in good works, not as our contribution as though we could add anything to the utter sufficiency of the atoning death of Christ, but as the proof that our faith is the 'real deal, not an empty bogus claim. ‘Faith alone’ could be an easy slogan for a shallow and empty belief or it could be a profound grasp of the entirely unmerited kindness of God that comes to us in the gospel.
