This week we conclude our series through the book of Hosea. Chapter 14 includes the final call to Israel to repent of their idolatry and return to the Lord. However, the very thing the Lord requires of them, they are unable to do of themselves. Rebellion and sin are not merely acts of the will which need correcting, they are matters we need to be healed of. And the Lord, in his kindness and unfailing love, promises to do just that - I will heal their apostasy; I will love them freely. As we have heard throughout this series, the Lord is faithful to his covenant promises - both in judgment and in mercy. In fact, it is through these judgments that the Lord's people are brought to life and made to flourish. We know today that this anticipates the wrath of God poured out upon his Son on the cross. It is there at Calvary that death was entered into and overcome so that life can flourish for all who believe and 'return to the Lord'. It is there that the Lord has healed all his beloved of their iniquity and sin, enabling us to return to him and love him with our whole heart, soul and might. Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them; for the ways of the Lord are right, and the upright walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them. Thanks be to God.
