Some of the gifts given to the church were temporary as it was a new spiritual entity to whom God was giving new revelation. The purpose of a spiritual gift determined its duration so a look at the historical record of the first thirty years of the church's history clarifies the use of those gifts which were temporary. Gifts to give new revelation were given by God as were sign gifts to validate and confirm the new revelation and those who were the ministry of those through whom God was giving that revelation. Such was the gift of tongues as scripture defines it as being able to speak a foreign language that was unlearned and previously unknown to the speaker. It was the communication of words understandable and identifiable to those who knew the human language. With the completion of the New Testament there was no longer the need for the temporary gifts.
