The security of salvation for both the Jew and the Gentile is in the fact that the Word of God has not failed.
God gave specific promises to the Jews, through the Patriarchs, in regard to their salvation. The covenantal blessings were not a blanket covering to every physical descendant. These promises are fulfilled in those who are also spiritual descendants of Abraham who the Scriptures tell us was declared righteous by having believed God.
In this section two Old Testament examples are used to illustrate this point. For a physical descendant of Abraham to experience salvation they must share the same faith that Abraham had. Abraham’s sons Isaac and Ishmael make the point at hand. They shared the same physical father and yet only Isaac believed in the God of his father Abraham and was saved.
The second example is given of Jacob and Esau demonstrating God's sovereign choice is unconditioned by anything done either by an individual or because of any prior circumstance. God's choices are not on the basis of any works so His choices are not on the basis of His foreknowledge. The Scripture clarifies that God's election is solely on the basis of His purpose which is Self-determined. These passages also demonstrate that God's election is individual and national in regard to the nation of Israel.
