In his letter to the church at Colosse, the apostle assures them of his prayers and of his desire that they might be filled with the knowledge of God's will in ‘all wisdom and spiritual understanding.’ He expresses his wish that they might ‘walk worthy of the Lord’, and ‘be fruitful in every good work, increasing in the knowledge of God.’ He goes on to give the result of these things in that they will be ‘strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness.’ His prayer therefore is a ‘prayer with promise’, and we can understand that what he prays for and desires for the church at Colosse is also promised for the Christians of our day, indeed, for you and for me.
Our God is all powerful; His power is a glorious power. He can perform all that He has promised. Nothing is too difficult for Him. His power secures all the outcomes He desires and wills.
By the application of His power He strengthens the believer. He comes to us in our weakness; by His power He strengthens our faith, and firms our convictions. He comes to strengthen the fearful; the timid and the anxious. He gives comfort; and if we lack assurance He is able to restore it to us.
How does this Power and strengthening come? He has given to us His Word, the Bible; He uses preaching, His appointed means of proclamation for our strengthening and help. We may not understand His providence, but by His Spirit He will guide and lead us.
So, trust in God, believe that his power which is glorious will meet with you and me in our weakness; and through patience and longsuffering lead us into that joy that is ‘inexpressible and full of glory.’
