We have come now to the application which our Lord Jesus would give to us concerning all of these eschatological truths that He has presented to His disciples in this chapter. The Lord Jesus makes His application in the form of a parable concerning a fig tree. He would not only have His disciples of that day to understand it, but He would also have us, His disciples in this day, to understand it. To be able to understand this parable is the first step in our being ready for our Lord’s Second Coming. It is the first step in our being better prepared for all the momentous events which may come to us in our own generation. In order to understand this whole prophecy aright, therefore, it is important that we understand 1st of all – the meaning of this fig tree; to what or to whom does it refer? 2nd – It is important that we understand the meaning of its branch being tender and its putting forth its leaves. And 3rd – It is important that we understand what the word “it” means in the phrase, “know that it is near—at the doors!”
