The first part of Zechariah consisted of 8 visions. Now, we see a prophetic symbolic act.
I. A Symbol of Christ 6:9-15
v. 9 – The Word of the Lord came to me.
v. 10-11 -- Zechariah was told to make a crown out of the gold and silver that these Jews had brought back with them.
THE BRANCH – Zechariah elaborating on a theme used by Isaiah and Jeremiah. Already saw this in 3:8 Isaiah 4:2; Isaiah 11:1-5; Jeremiah 23:5-6; Jeremiah 33:15-16
v. 12b-13a – He will build the Temple.
v. 13b – He will be a King and Priest
II. A Controversy Regarding Fasting 7:1-8:23
A. A Question about Fasting 7:1-3
B. The Challenge from God 7:4-7 Those in Bethel were observing 4 fast days in 4 different months.
4th month = lament the breach in the walls of Jerusalem made by the invading armies of Nebuchadnezzar.
5th month = the burning of the Temple.
7th month = The assassination of Gedaliah, who had been the governor of Jerusalem (2 Kings 25:22-25; Jeremiah 41:1-3)
10th month = They fasted to mourn the beginning of Nebuchadnezzar's siege of Jerusalem. (2 Kings 25:1; Jeremiah 39:1; Ezekiel 24:1-2)
There was only one fast day commanded in the OT. Lev. 16:29
