John 1:29-34 Matthew 3:13-17 Isaiah 53:5-7 Matthew 3:1-2 1 Peter 3:13-16 Matthew 4:17 Luke 5:32 Luke 13:3, 5 Jeremiah 17:9 2 Peter 1:2-3
This morning we find ourselves about half-way in the first chapter of the gospel of John, with our text being John 1:29-34.
The apostle has introduced us to two men at this point; Jesus Christ, the incarnation of God, the second person of the trinity of God, the divine Creator and provider of all things, both seen and unseen, the One known as the Word, the Logos, the true Light of men who came to save us from our sins.
The second man John introduced is John the Baptist, the one God appointed before he was conceived in his mother's womb, to announce the coming of Jesus Christ into the world; more specifically, to the nation of Israel; the Jews.
John the Baptist is known in Scripture as the forerunner of Jesus Christ, and last week we studied the character of the Baptist; what was required of John to be willing to declare to the Jewish nation that repentance of their sins, and to be baptized, was necessary to prepare for the coming of their Messiah?
We found that the same requirements are necessary for all believers in Jesus Christ in today's world, since God has commanded each of us to bring the knowledge of Jesus Christ to the world; to bring the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ to all who remain in unbelief.
Those requirements, let's call them attributes, are: 1. Humility 2. A servant's heart 3. Surrender
We found that it takes complete surrender to the will of God to successfully do the work of God, putting our own interests secondary to God's interests.
