As of last Sunday, we have now completed our study of the prologue of the gospel according to John; that is John 1:1 through 18. Within these verses John the apostle introduced Jesus Christ as the Word, as God, the Light of men, to the unbelieving nation of Israel, and a world living in spiritual darkness.
John further introduced a man appointed by God to be a witness for the truth about Jesus; a man who resembled Elijah the prophet, a man who was the last of the Old testament prophets, John the Baptist.
John the Baptist's testimony of the coming of Jesus was powerful, and he drew many of the Jews out to repent and be baptized in the Jordan River.
After the apostle described John the Baptist to us, he immediately returned to write about Jesus Christ in John 1:14, a verse that is key to the entire gospel: And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
The remainder of the first chapter, verses 19-51 describe events that took place over a period of several days, beginning with some of the priests and Levites coming to see the Baptist and inquiring about his identity.
