Paul says, For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. Paul stood boldly for the purity of the gospel. Would he be a people-pleaser or a servant of Christ? On April 18, 1521, Martin Luther stood before the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and was given an opportunity to recant. He said this: "Unless I am convinced by the testimony of Scripture and by clear reason (for I do not trust in the pope or councils alone, since it is well known that they have often erred and contradicted themselves), I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted. My conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not retract anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen." And 500 years later we are still living in the legacy of his stand because Luther sought to please God rather than man, and so must we.
