One of the very serious threats to every Christian marriage is that over time, through the busyness of building a life together, a couple's love for each other grows cold, but they would never utter those awful words, "I don't love you anymore, I want out." They stay faithful no matter what, but there is no passion, no spark of that original love between them anymore. Many marriages are like this--faithful, but loveless. But this isn't a sermon on marriage, because what I just described is actually the condition of many churches in America today. They're faithful--they've held the line against the onslaught of progressivism and compromise, they've stood for truth, but in all this their love for their Savior and others has grown cold. This was the condition of the church at Ephesus that Jesus speaks to in our text and the big takeaway I want us to get from this passage is that even pure and persevering churches often drift and need their passion for Christ and love for others revived. |
