Here is another marvelous text about the uniqueness and superiority of the only true and living God. As the text opens, He reveals His absolute superiority over the predominant gods of Babylon, for these will be the gods that His people will face when they are in exile. He demonstrates His capacity to be faithful in ways that exceed what the false gods could ever be. Therefore, He should be trusted, even when circumstances are dark and confusing, and contrary to what was expected. But His people must count upon what He has revealed about Himself. They must never fashion an idea of God that is according to their own understanding. This would be deadly, eventually resulting in their departure from the living God. They must shape their view of God only by the word of God. I then point out why that is so important for the modern Christian. The text is brought to a conclusion with God's own reiteration of His uniqueness. In the conclusion to the sermon I stress what God says is man's basic problem: he is incredibly stubborn and resists the light of truth. In spite of that, God still draws near to sinners with the Gospel!
