As Jesus' Galilean ministry draws to a close, the Scribes and Pharisees challenge Him regarding the traditions of the elders. Jesus retorts by indicting these religious leaders for putting human tradition over Scripture. We too must take care we do not annul the Bible with our church traditions. The Pharisees emphasize external ceremonial washings. Indwelling sin is the real problem. We need internal washing and cleaning. It's what's within that defiles us.
