We come this morning to Moses, the great lawgiver and author of the Pentateuch. Our Lord Himself testified to Moses in the most glowing terms when He said "If they believed Moses, they would believe me, for he wrote of me" (John 5:46). Moses is a great evangelist, a Christ-centered prophet who wrote about the coming great prophet and said "The Word is very near you." Moses single-handedly established the Jewish religion. The Hebrews were tempted to go back to following the Levitical system more or less as Moses had ordained it. And so the writer brings in Moses at this point to say, "As much as you admire Moses and want to follow him, you must realize that he too lived by faith. If you want to follow Moses, then you will stay in the church in faith, not shrink back to the synagogue in unbelief." Thus, he describes the faith of Moses, and the faith of Moses' parents Amram and Jochebed, telling us that this faith strengthens righteous deeds but weakens wickedness. These verses present a contrast between faith and fear, between faith and status, faith and pleasure, faith and mammon. Every time, faith wins out.
