After issues were settled at the Jerusalem council, Paul and Barnabas left with the intention of revisiting churches established on their first missionary journey.
Before what would become known as the second missionary journey even began, controversy arose over who would go on the team. At the center was John Mark who had bailed off the team on the first trip. A sharp disagreement between Barnabas and Paul over John Mark resulted in their parting ways despite their strong bond in previous ministry. Great courage and rigor were required to partner with Paul in ministry. Having not been reliable under pressure, John Mark was not as useful as he needed to be for that particular work. As a result Silas came on board to replace Barnabas and Timothy replaced John Mark. Barnabas and John Mark continued in ministry but did not travel with Paul.
Much later, after his missionary journey's were over and he was imprisoned, Paul called for John Mark making a special point that then he was useful for the ministry at hand.
Issues were then dealt with regarding Timothy's background having a Gentile father and a Jewish mother. Timothy was circumcised in respect to the covenant God made with Abraham, not as an obligation under the Law for salvation.
