Romans 1:21 "Because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened." I think we often fall short in our preaching of the law when our aim is to show unregenerate men that their problem with God is only legal and we are not aiming to bring the "death blow" to the conscience by helping people understand that their problem with God is also moral and I would say; man's problem with God is primarily moral. As our text tells us, the carnal man's problem is not ignorance, but it is that he is in open denial of what he knows to be true. The human condition, without God, is that we are violators of God's law and therefore we are criminals in His court room and not criminals with penitent hearts, but on the contrary impenitent violators of God's law and therefore flagrant sinners and unwilling to submit to His sovereign rule. My brothers we must be willing to confront men with their real problem and their problem is that they are haters of God and once were we and would be right now accept for by the grace of God. Man's problem is not that he has ignorantly broken God's law and that that has incurred a debt, but man's problem is that his heart is in rebellion against God and he will not have God to rule over him, therefore he is a child of the devil and the lusts of their father they will do (John 8:44). There seems to be much talk about preaching the law and to that I give a hearty Amen, however let's understand that if men do not see their condition, in that they are enemies of Christ and that it was them standing there yelling "crucify Him"; I have trouble believing they can come to Christ for the right reason. So let us preach the law for the conviction of sin that men would see their wretched condition and turn to The Lord Jesus Christ.
