Here, we begin a list of creatures that are weak in and of themselves, but make up for it with their wisdom. The first creature that Agur mentions is the ant. The wisdom of the ant is seen in their diligent instinct to store food in the summer. To be diligent simply means to exert a strong, constant energy toward a particular goal. Diligence requires endurance and a focus that sees beyond the present. This is a timely word for Christians in the day in which we live. Dear reader, how is your diligence in the spiritual disciplines that accompany maturity in the faith? Do you lose heart quickly in prayer and reading of the Word, because it doesn’t seem as satisfying as you think it should be? In a world of immediate gratification, and a society where discipline is quickly becoming a lost art, we would do well to look to the ant, and learn the wisdom of diligence.
