Placed between a list of four things too wonderful for Agur to know, and four things which trouble the earth, is the observation that arrogant deceit and an adulterous life-style go hand in hand. The illustration that Agur gives is used to highlight this display. The individual partakes of the forbidden pleasure (eateth), gets rid of the evidence (wipeth her mouth), and will swear on the holy of holies that they have done no wrong. They are passionate, dramatic, and even convincing at times. The adulterous individual becomes an expert in deception, and knows how to remove the spotlight from their sin. “I have done no wickedness” she cries, and this, just moments after hiding the incriminating evidence. May Christ give us the wisdom to know how to apply His word, in believing the truth about sins' powerful influence, and discerning who is trustworthy.
