The principle taught here is a very helpful insight into basic human nature. If you treat a servant like a son, he will eventually grow to expect, rather than appreciate, this treatment. Eventually this servant will become unproductive and cause much grief. The tendency toward entitlement, applies to all humans in all relationships. Whether we are speaking of the way a boss relates to his employees, or a parent to a child, the point is the same. When we condition people to neglect appropriate responsibilities, we should not be surprised when they turn out to be an unproductive burden. That may seem harsh, but a servant who thinks he ought to be a son, or a child who thinks they should never work, eventually ends up being an unproductive burden to you, and to society as a whole. May we have the wisdom to be kind to others in a way that leads to their ultimate good, rather than temporary pleasure.
