“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” Proverbs 28:13

Psalm 19 makes the simple observation that the word of God is right. In a vacuum, every believer will quickly affirm this statement. And we must affirm this statement from the heart because when we begin to apply the word to everyday life, our natures strain against the rightness of the word. This passage in Proverbs illustrates this point well. Nothing in our flesh enjoys confession while everything in our flesh believes that covering sin is vital self-preservation. Yet nothing could be more wrong than what our flesh believes, according to this passage. In reality, covering kills. In reality, confession is linked to freedom from the bondage of sin. In reality, only in forsaking is mercy realized. The passage is very plain. What is less plain, at least in the mind of the sinner, is whether it is right. It is only through faith, the simple declaration that God is more right than even my own understanding, that we are enabled to lay hold of the power of passages like this. You can be sure that God is right. Will you believe Him today?
