“Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.” Proverbs 28:7
Solomon returns to a familiar theme, one that cannot be overstated. Spiritual faithfulness (obedience) is inextricably linked to relationships. It is simply impossible to maintain faithfulness to God and faithfulness to those who hate God. As elementary as this concept may seem, the reminder is essential because we constantly try to disprove it. Whether the companion is an actual person or a television screen or an earbud, we are tempted to attempt an impossible balancing act with God and things God hates. Like oil and water, it never mixes. We are either drawn into fellowship with God through relationships, or we are drawn away from God through relationships, but relationships are never neutral. Do not let Satan or the voice of your feelings convince you otherwise.
