Our text today, speaks of the ability for people to understand others, by understanding themselves. Just as we can look into the water and see the reflection of our faces, as we observe people in general, we can also see the reflections of our own hearts desires and struggles. The bible is very clear about the fact that all of humanity by nature is connected in deep commonality, as we consider the thoughts and desires of our hearts. Genesis 6 tells us that our commonality is that the thoughts of our heart are exclusively and continuously evil. While this may not seem to be an encouraging truth, in reality, it is. This truth is very helpful as we seek to exercise compassion and understanding toward those around us. What a blessing, to know that we can know others and be known of others in such an intimate way by God’s design.
