Solomon here presents a healthy, balanced approach to God’s sovereignty in daily life and man’s responsibility. God provides the fruit. God brings the honor. But an unbalanced understanding of God’s sovereignty can lead to irresponsibility based on the false assumption that God will just drop the fruit into our mouth magically. But God has ordained to accomplish His purposes through not only extraordinary measures. In fact, God usually works through the ordinary. The one who gets the fruit is usually the one who has pruned, watered, weeded, and protected the tree. The one who goes hungry sat in the house waiting for the fig bowl to be filled with figs. Peace is found in the one who has labored to see figs safely produced. In the midst of the labor, this person understands that the both the ability to work and the ultimate success of our work comes from the sovereign goodness of God. The blessing, the success, the fruit – we contentedly leave in the hand of God. The work – we labor diligently, believing in faith that God will bring the increase.
