Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 27:14

“He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse unto him.” Proverbs 27:14

Love is kind. Love is considerate. At times, we become frustrated because others just do not seem to appreciate our efforts. And while this may at times be justified frustration, it might also be helpful to look in the mirror. In several passages in Proverbs, Solomon emphasizes the importance of having self-awareness. If we are not self-aware, we will grow frustrated because people don’t appreciate our humor, our schedule, our point of view, our efforts to be friendly, or any other number of things. It may be that the real problem is not others. The real issue may be my insistence that things go according to my way. While this may seem like a minor issue, major conflict constantly results from a lack of consideration for others. Many in-laws relations are hampered by hurt feelings, misunderstanding, and subsurface tension that could be healed with a healthy dose of consideration and acceptance that everybody is just a little bit different, and that this difference is ok. A different schedule, personality, or way of folding laundry – these aren’t moral issues, and they aren’t an affront on righteousness. Instead, they are an expression of the uniqueness of the individual, and we should thank God for these differences even as we seek to live in harmony.
