"Open rebuke is better than secret love." Proverbs 27:5
This is a truth that we would do well to remember when we have received a rebuke, or have the opportunity to minister a rebuke to one that we love. The wording of this text is very significant in the fact that if we are not willing to openly rebuke our loved ones, we are hiding our love for them. It is also significant to understand that a rebuke is not the same thing as tearing someone down, or giving full vent to you frustrations with them and their choices. Rather, a rebuke addresses foolish or sinful behavior, and then points the recipient toward Christ, encouraging faith and repentance. If we are wise, we will recognize that being rebuked is grace, and ministering rebuke is ministering grace. May the God of grace give us the wisdom to be able to give and receive this grace in gratefulness and love.
