"Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?" Proverbs 27:4
Our passage today speaks of the foolishness of fueling envy. Anger and wrath are very difficult to endure, but jealousy is next to impossible. While jealousy is sinful, many times it is fueled by sinful behavior. The flirtatious man or woman, who is all too comfortable engaging in inappropriate conversation with married individuals of the opposite sex. The vain woman; who’s desire is that all other women would recognize her beauty or apparel to be superior. We could give many different scenarios, but the bottom line is it’s an evidence of foolishness when we provoke envy. The biblical alternative is to provoke one another to love and good works (Hebrew 10:24). God is clear that we should be striving in our daily life to esteem others better than ourselves (Philippians 2:3). May Christ give us the desire and strength to perform what He has called us to do.
