Are you an individual who has fun joking around and tricking people? While our passage today is not against humor, it is against habitually lying, and trying to play it off as a joke. This is one of those passages that we could get very technical with, trying to parse the different scenarios of distinguishing a lie from joke. It might be helpful to know that your intentions have nothing to do with whether or not you lie. If you convince someone of a falsehood, and they are unaware of the fact that you are joking, then they have been deceived, because you have told a lie. Solomon says that an individual, who makes a habit of this, is like a lunatic, who shoots fiery arrow at random and kills innocent, unsuspecting people. While this might seem a bit overboard to you, the fact is, lying kills trust, and a lack of trust kills relationships. While the “joke” might seem funny in the moment, the relationship is dying in the long run. May we look to Christ for self-control, that we might love our neighbor as ourselves.
