In a culture that is ripe with reality TV and drama queens, this is relevant wisdom. An individual who involves themselves in someone else’s fight or argument, is about as wise as someone who would grab a pit bull by the ears. Think of the damage and possible death that would occur if you were to walk up to a pit bulldog that you didn’t know, and suddenly grab it by the ears. Solomon says that to involve yourself in someone else’s argument, when you have not been invited, can be just as damaging. While there may be occasions where someone asks for your help, this passage is speaking of you getting emotionally, verbally, or physically involved in a conflict that doesn’t belong to you. No matter what your intentions, meddling in other people’s business is never considered wise in the scriptures. Wisdom would have us to tend to the conflicts that fall under the realm of our responsibility. God has given us a certain amount of energy for each day. May we use every ounce of that energy for His glory, and not dishonor Him by wasting it on unfruitful distractions.
