Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 26:20

"Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth." Proverbs 26:20

Gossip is such a distructive sin, and yet it can roll off of our tongues so easily can’t it? As a matter of fact, we can be in the middle of a conversation and all of a sudden realize that we have drifted in to gossip without even realizing it. The nugget of wisdom that we receive from our passage today is that gossip is the fuel that either ignites strife, or keeps it going. When we gossip about another individual, we are planting potential seeds of strife in the ears and hearts of our audience. We cannot heed Jesus’ call to being peacemakers, and be gossips at the same time. Jesus knows this, and takes our gossip as a personal offence. Matthew 12:36 tells us that one day, we are going to give an account to Him for every idle word that we have spoken, and this includes gossip. May we look to God for self-control, that we may grow in our ability to speak the truth in love.
