Hebrews 3:13 instructs us to exhort one another daily, lest we be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. We see this hardening of sin today, as we read about the sluggard who listens to no one but himself. The idea of seven men probably alludes to seven as the perfect number. So, the sluggard can listen to a multitude of men, using sound reason, and still walk away unconvinced that he is wrong. This should be terrifying to us friends. We can convince ourselves, against all sound reason, that we are the wisest individual we know. As we become hardened by sin, we can actually oppose wisdom with conviction and zeal. God places people in our lives for a reason, and part of that reason is so that we might be rebuked or exhorted, so that we are not hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. May we listen, when God sends a faithful exhortation our way.
