The comparison here may not be one that we are used to making, but it brilliantly paints the picture of the slothful. A door may turn on its hinges 100 times in a day, and yet it has made no progress, it is fixed to the wall, and can only swing back and forth. While there is certainly nothing wrong with a door fulfilling its proper function, when it comes to the slothful, he tends to expend energy that is very unproductive. The slothful work very hard at not working; so the energy that is spent, is usually spent on unproductive avoidance of work. The individual, who fits the character description of the slothful in Proverbs, is an individual whose energy is spent toward self-destruction.
