Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 26:12

“Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? There is more hope of a fool than of him.” Proverbs 26:12

There are two fools in this verse. One is obviously a fool, having made bad choice after bad choice. The destruction is there for all to gawk at. There really is no hiding it. And yet there is hope for this person because he knows he is a fool. The second fool is successful, having made good choice after good choice. His house is well-groomed, his children are well-behaved, his marriage is healthy, and he is sought for advice at work and church. Yet, he is a fool because he has convinced himself that he is just naturally wise. He just has a knack for looking at situations, considering all the options, and always picking the right one. And Solomon says this man is nearly hopeless. Have you enjoyed success in life? Are your children on the right track? Is your marriage healthy? If so, praise the Lord. While you have likely walked in wisdom, it was God who gave you the strength and the will to walk in that wisdom. Where you have failed, He has provided the grace to overcome your failures. Many Christian families make the mistake of attributing success to their own wisdom and technique. In doing this, they begin to glory and take pride in their blessings. In becoming proud, we become fools. He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
