“As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.” Proverbs 26:11

The transformation of a fool into a wise person begins with this premise. While the fool regrets the consequences of his foolishness, he never stops escaping the predicament because he convinces himself that the next time will be different. Either through better effort or better management, things will turn out better the next time. This self-perpetuating delusion will never stop until the premise of this verse is believed. Why is this premise true? It is not because we are poor managers of foolishness, though we are. It is because fools love foolishness by nature, just as dogs love vomit. The fool always finds folly because his heart craves folly. Transformation of a fool continues with this humiliating but liberating confession: “I am a fool.” It is only through the amazing grace of God that any would ever utter such humiliating words. But it is through these words that the cycle of foolishness stops becoming a cycle. Through grace, the fool begins to crave righteousness as displayed in the person of Jesus Christ. In this pursuit of Christ, the transforming individual will once again find folly, but the experience will be different. The vomit is not as savory as it used to be, and the stench will be unbearable. The return to folly will not breed endless returns. Instead, it will breed repentance, confession, and prayer for grace.
