Here we have a very careful distinction that we would do well to understand. Sin is not only found in foolish actions, but in the very thought of foolishness. While this may seem to be difficult to grasp in a practical way, it is consistent with the basic concept of repentance being “a change of mind”. The New Testament teaches that our thoughts and imaginations lead to our actions. Jesus clearly teaches this as He declares “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh”. The heart and the mind are synonymous in biblical teaching; they are the control center of the individual. Action is always preceded by thought, and God is clear that sin takes place in seed form, long before the actions have come to fruition. Solomon goes on to say that the fool, whose thoughts have influenced his life, will be disgustingly offensive to men. This last thought is a real testimony to the grace of wisdom isn’t it? Thank the Lord, that in His mercies, He compels us to get wisdom, as we are being conformed to the image of His Son.
