For the Local Area Downe is the church on our Prayer Diary for the coming week. The Church correspondent writes: βWe give thanks for the ministry of visiting speakers and the support of local churches. Please pray for clear direction as we seek God's guidance for the future of His church in our village.β
For the Wider Area The Grace World View - Luxembourg Luxembourg is located in Western Europe at the intersection of France, Germany, and Belgium. It is one of the smallest countries in Europe. Approximately 475,000 people live in Luxembourg. Approximately two-thirds are natives. The remainder are mostly expatriates. Luxembourg has a highly industrialized economy and a strong financial system. The economy has performed well for many years. Luxembourg has one of the highest average incomes in the world, and the people enjoy a great deal of material wealth. Luxembourg gained independence in the early 1800's. It has been a leading member of the European Union and is the home of several EU offices. It operates as a constitutional monarchy. Although there is freedom of religion, the Roman Catholic Church is effectively the state church. Nearly 95% of the population is classified as Roman Catholic. There are very few evangelicals in Luxembourg, and they're almost entirely among the expatriates. The Roman Catholic Church has been decreasing in relevance over the last few decades. Many people on the rolls of the church have no real association with it. A number have turned to cults and New Age thinking. The Jehovah's Witness have been growing faster than the number of evangelicals. There are a small number of evangelical churches and the few evangelical missionaries. Few in Luxembourg have truly heard the gospel. Pray for the missionaries and believers as they seek to share their faith with those around them.
Religious freedom, Vietnam, and the church--differing views. Vietnam has been praised for its strides toward religious freedom. In fact, there were hints that the country could be taken off the U.S. list of the world's worst religious liberty offenders. Open Doors' Jerry Dykstra says Vietnam dropped from 3rd to 7th on their World Watch list this year. It's improved, but it won't be enough. "This US Commission on International Religious Freedom, they're recommending that Vietnam stay on that country of particular concern list for severe religious freedom violations. That came out about a week ago. The final report will come out this spring." Dykstra says believers are encouraged and urges prayer. "There's hope, because it seems that things are opening up and that there's more openness to the Gospel. At the same time, there are still people being arrested, especially in the countryside. We need to temper our optimism by the reality of what is taking place there."
