This passage is so important that it cannot be digested immediately. It demands deep reflection, prayer, and the seeking of God’s face. Each generation carries a certain tension with the past generation. The landmark was a border, a boundary that marked property lines. The tendency of youth is to dismiss established landmarks in the pursuit of enlightened change. For example, the landmarks of marriage are currently being re-written in our society in the name of enlightenment. And yet, change in the form of repentance and renewal is a necessary ingredient in the life of a Christian. And so, how do we determine if landmarks should be moved? Really, this passage is a call for humility and patience. Or, in opposite terms, it is a strike against arrogance and presumption, the presumption that I have more wisdom than my fathers. Significant change should never be entered into lightly. The right goal is to discover God’s landmarks as expressed in His word while maintaining an appreciation and respect for the wisdom of past generations.
