Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 22:26-27

“Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts. If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?” Proverbs 22:26,27

It is interesting that Solomon returns to this topic, one that we might consider fairly small in importance. This is at least the third time that Solomon warns his son against the folly of binding oneself to another’s debts. Why is this so important as we pursue a life of Godliness?

  • The implication is that in becoming a surety, one is making a promise that he cannot guarantee can be kept. This is a reminder that our words matter to God. Any lie, no matter how well intended, is still a lie.

  • Facilitating another’s life is not always kind or wise. Many people create greater problems for their children or loved ones by a false sense of love or obligation. Many times, the end result is the facilitation of greater foolishness and recklessness. The opportunity to learn hard but necessary lessons is lost if foolishness has no consequence.
  • This is not a strike against charity and kindness. Just a few verses prior, Solomon exhorted his son to kindness to the poor. Kindness, however, must proceed from what we have, not from what we don’t have.

  • Wisdom always pursues peace. Financial misunderstanding is a great separator of friends. My father often wisely advised, “Give, don’t lend.”

  • In light of these thoughts about surety, it is always good to remember that Jesus Christ is our Surety. The very same thing God warns us against in human relations, He took upon Himself in assuming responsibility for the debts of His beloved people. However, as opposed to what often occurs in human surety, Christ had sufficient funds to pay in full the debt we could not pay.
