The contrast presented here is one of sight. Of the many miracles of Jesus, one of the most precious is the giving of sight to the blind. The pitch black darkness of blindness makes a terribly difficult life experience and to have one’s world opened wide by sight would just be indescribably good. Salvation is likened to this same miracle, the gift of sight. Spiritual sight gives the ability to see things clearly, both the “right now” things and even more significantly, future things. It is this ability to see the “right now” with the added perspective of the future that produces wisdom. The foolish can only see the “right now.” This obscured vision causes an all-out pursuit of immediate gratification, the spirit of “I want what I want and I want it right now.” In this reckless pursuit, preparation for the future is forgotten, and it is all spent up. In contrast, the wise is prepared, both for now and the future. He understands that immediate decisions have long-term consequences. His heart is not set on immediate gratification but on lasting treasure.
