We need to remember that Proverbs is a collection of thoughts that Solomon shared with his son to prepare him for life. He was communicating with his son in a real, practical way. In this particular communication, Solomon shares a mission statement that summarizes everything he has previously said. Life and honor are found in living with this mindset. The mission statement can be broken down like this:

• Follow After - The wise person is diligent. He is proactive. He pursues. He does not seek to avoid responsibility. Life cannot be built on a hope or a wish. It must be pursued.
