“It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and angry woman.” Proverbs 21:19

Ten verses earlier, Solomon makes nearly the same point. In our comments on that verse, we focused on the general evil of conflict. But, in both verses, Solomon is specifically talking about women. This does not mean that anger and contention are reserved for women. But, it does imply that the resolution of conflict tends to be more difficult for women. This is important for men and women alike to understand. Solomon intends this insight to help his son, not to give him something to gloat about. God has designed men and women to complement one another in real, meaningful ways. One of the ways is through leadership. God has called men, specifically husbands, to lead their wives. In this specific area of conflict, Godly leadership is a crucial need. The Godly husband will carefully listen to the concerns and conclusions his wife forms regarding conflict. He will then seek to frame the issue in a way that leads to resolution of the conflict. Sometimes, that means going to the offending party to discuss, acknowledge, and seek forgiveness. Sometimes, that means watching to insure that the issue isn’t being brooded over. Sometimes, it means insisting on Biblical forgiveness and letting go of past grudges. In a sinful world, offenses will always be a part of our experience. The grace of God, however, leads to resolution. Christians always have hope of resolution of offense because the greatest offense has been resolved for us by the blood of Jesus Christ.
