A Thought From the Word
“And when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal. But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king's sons which were slain; and they hid him, even him and his nurse, in the bedchamber from Athaliah, so that he was not slain. And he was with her hid in the house of the LORD six years. And Athaliah did reign over the land. " II Kings 11:1-3
Motivated by power-lust and rage against God, Athaliah wanted to murder all the royal seed, the kingly line of David's family. She thought she succeeded, but she was wrong! God had promised that David's royal family would continue, because from this family line would come the Messiah, King Jesus. She almost accomplished her desire, killing everyone in the family...except one!
God's purposes can never be overcome, even with such Satan-inspired evil. If Athaliah had succeeded, there would be no son of David, there would be no Messiah, no Savior of sinners! Believer, God was working with your salvation in view all the way back in the times of these bloody days in Judah. He saw to it, that the son of David, a Redeemer, would be born and ultimately die and be raised up for your salvation!
First, be encouraged in these dark days that we presently live in. God's purposes will not be thwarted. Even when evil is raging, God is still working. It may be silent working or not even visible to our eyes, but He is working. Second, God uses faithful people to accomplish His purposes. He used a brave woman, Jehosheba, to risk her own life to secretly preserve this child. None of us think of Jehosheba as a household name, but she was a faithful woman who God used. May you and I be those faithful servants of God in our generation who He will see fit to use for His glory!
