“And he burnt the house of the LORD, and the king's house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and every great man's house burnt he with fire. And all the army of the Chaldees, that were with the captain of the guard, broke down the walls of Jerusalem round about." II Kings 25:9, 10 These verses should stand out: God's temple was destroyed by a pagan nation. The city of God was decimated. There was utter destruction. What can we learn?
1. The ugly cost of sin: God Himself forecasted this judgment from Babylon. It was because of repeated rebellion by the people of Judah. God had mercifully sent warning after warning, but the people refused to change their sinful ways. Let us take heed and hear the word of God!
2. The grace of God: This is not the last page of Scripture! After 70 years of captivity, God would mercifuly restore the people to Jerusalem and the house of God would be rebuilt. This story is really a picture of salvation. We ruin ourselves by sin, but the grace of God through Jesus Christ redeems us from destruction. Praise God!
3. The permanency of Jesus' Kingdom: The house that was burned here was the great one that Solomon had built. The wealth and splendor of His kingdom was literally the talk of the world...but it had a sad end. This great house was burned and the city ransacked. We serve a greater than Solomon, Jesus Christ. His kingdom is forever and victorious. What a privilege we have to be a part of that! Let us daily serve faithfully in whatever sphere or role we are called, all with a view to being building blocks in the kingdom of Jesus Christ. Being a faithful employee, consistently training our children, preaching sermons or suffering through arthritis with faith...all this for the King as citizens of the Kingdom.
